This multi-unit dwelling (3 Units) is situated in Norman Gardens, North Rockhampton in a residential estate. The site had an area of 1031m² and was located in a low density residential zone meaning an impact assessable development application was required. The development provides 3 units which from the street frontage have a modern appearance and is a seamless addition to this residential area. Each unit has 3 bedrooms and a generous open living area that offers great flow from the front door through the living areas and out to the outdoor entertainment area. Although this site is tight these units offer a large open spaces and a family style lifestyle that is not normally found with unit developments.

The renovation was quite substantial and involved the demolition of the majority of the existing dwelling. The result, a beautiful homage to the previous dwelling and the character zone it is situated in. The new home has a modern open living area, with the kitchen front and centre to all living spaces making this the perfect home for entertaining. The front deck is easily accessible from all internal living areas and has great aspect of the Berserker Hills & Mount Archer National Park.

4 Units on John Street is nestled amongst old workers cottages & interwar bungalows in an older pocket of Yeppoon. The development is a functional and flexible set of residences catering to a wide demographic. The built form is sympathetic to its surroundings with street front deck, linea cladding and stepped hip roofs creating a modern take on the old bungalow. Setout rooms on the upper level are clad with VJ creating articulation and shadow which help break the bulk along the buildings length.

Site position and orientation means all units can capture prevailing south easterly winds whilst screening and selected landscaping protects from the harsh western sun. This site setout affords great year-round natural cooling which is essential in our subtropical climate. Open plan living from deck to kitchen to dining/living make the most of a small building footprint creating a space that feels larger than it really is.

Located on a quiet street in the small beachside town of Emu Park this raised cottage is perfectly positioned to capture the beautiful coastal breezes on offer. The old cottage still breathes with the existing hardwood joists and trusses forming the bones of this build. Large open decks envelop the living quarters whilst the lineaboard cladding & casement windows conceal it. A new layout opens this floor plan up with multiple indoor/outdoor connections creating a more inviting sense. This beautiful highset workers cottage is the old cottage reimagined with a built form that is reminiscent of it predecessors era. Quirky finishes and little nooks throughout keep you guessing. A modern yet quaint home this workers cottage is straight out of the 1920’s.

The client’s rationale was to create a freestanding restaurant with dine-in, take-away and drive thru service. Provision was to be made for dining on the external terrace. The selection of internal materials, finishes and fixtures was to be of a high quality, so as to move the restaurant slightly more upmarket from the typical fast food restaurant. At the same time, the whole concept is relatively new and untried, and as such, capital costs for any new construction was to be strictly minimised.

Approximately 50% of the existing site was already developed as an off street car park. This area was to remain undisturbed as much as possible. The proposed restaurant had certain inherent design constraints, which restricted the options for building location and orientation. The drive thru lane is required to have sufficient queuing space for vehicles such that traffic movements in the remaining car park and surrounding streets would not be affected.”

Kinka Cabin is the perfect weekend retreat. Located on the foreshore of the Capricorn coast this dwelling is situated perfectly to capture all this site has to offer. An open living area opens out onto the front deck where you are footsteps away from Kinka Beack. From the street looking in you see a classic Australian beach home reimagined. The white lineaboard and sharp low pitch roofs along with angled columns are reminiscent of Queensland post war modern dwellings. A secondary outdoor living area is located to the rear and is protected from the prevailing winds. This living area is framed by local sandstone and has a central fire pit making it the perfect place for cold winters nights.

Protected tree species are maintained and utilized as the perfect backdrop whilst creating natural shading. The layout and design captures this attractions heroes and enables the spectators at the zoo to capture the most intimate glimpses of these wonderful animals. Looking through these viewing windows you see an imitation of the meerkats natural habitat where these animals run wild and free, for a second you start to believe that you truly are in the South African wilderness.

The design of this office was unique as from the outset our clients requested they have the option to change building from a single tenancy into four tenancies if required. Clever planning of space allowed a design which with minimal work could be split into four tenancies. The corner site is located within a commercial precinct that is being rejuvenated. It was important to our client and us that we had a design that paid attention to each road frontage, was sympathetic to the existing character of the area whilst also being able to stand out amongst future commercial development.

The main focus for the design of this layout was to allow for the privacy of clients and safety of employees. The respite centre has a separate access to the reception/foyer to allow for privacy of the occupant. The reception is located immediately in the entrance of the building to ensure it is easily identifiable to clients and has a solid glass frontage as part of the reception desk to protect employees in the event of a violent customer. From there on out the building is fitted with security keyed doors in specific locations to ensure the safety of the employees. The meeting room downstairs has an entry/exit from the internal and external to guarantee that in the event of a client/patient becoming violent the employee has a second exit and is not entrapped in a corner. The external door also acts as an entry for clients who may be dealing with sensitive matters.

Primate Enclosure

The design of this enclosure took into account many elements. Of most importance was the safety of visitors, staff & animals whilst recreating the Macaques natural habitat. The existing site was tight and sensitive with animals located nearby as well as protected vegetation on the site. The final product was a structure which afforded a familiar habitat for the Macaques, safe observation for visitors & a structure which created minimal impact to the existing animals & function of the zoo. We were also able to incorporate the native vegetation into the design by creating a structure around these plants/trees.

Perched on the treetops in the secluded inverness estate on the outskirts of Yeppoon Sypher is designed utilizing multiple rooflines, ceiling heights and contrasting materials create an impressive first impression viewed from the street and contrasts the nearby neighbours. Articulation creating shadows and definition breaks up the bulk of the façade accompanied by the upper level cantilevered over a singular stone column creates the illusion of a floating appearance. The position and orientation of Sypher was carefully considered to best suit the natural topography and natural elements of the property and climate. An eastern facing outdoor patio is well positioned to be utilized year-round with the majority of the main house protecting guests from the harsh western sun in the afternoons.
